Cranley PR on the Day's Response to VP Dick "Head" Cheney's Visit to the West Side

Cranley Rolls Back Gas Prices to $1.26: The Price Before Cheney/Chabot Gave Billions to Big Oil (While Cheney Fills Up Chabot's Coffers With Oily Money

(Cincinnati – OH-1) Today, Congressional Candidate John Cranley offered the people of the 1st district an opportunity to get gasoline for $1.26 a gallon -- the price right before Chabot first voted for the the Dick Cheney Special Interest Energy Plan. Chabot, on the other hand, was getting ready for Dick Cheney to come fill-up his coffers with campaign cash.

Congressional Candidate John Cranley has consistently criticized Steve Chabot's flip-flop on giving corporate welfare to Big Oil while they have enjoyed record profits and gas prices have skyrocketed.

To make the point, Cranley worked with
Bob's Marathon in Price Hill to sell gas for $1.26 a gallon -- the amount before Chabot flip-flopped to rubberstamp the Cheney-Bush Energy plan that gave BILLIONS of taxpayer money to Big Oil. The demand was so great at Bob's Marathon that the announced half hour opportunity extended to an hour. After 98 drivers went through, Cranley for Congress reimbursed Bob's Marathon the $1700 difference.

Cranley's opponent, Steve Chabot, on the other hand, was getting ready to be thanked with campaign cash with the help of The Architect of the Special Interest Energy Plan -- Dick Cheney. Meeting behind closed doors for over four years with oil lobbyists, The Dick Cheney Energy Task Force crafted an energy bill to give BILLIONS of dollars in tax breaks and subsidies to oil and gas companies who have been making record profits since.

Since August of 2001, Chabot voted for every version of Cheney's taxpayer giveaway bill and even helped negotiate the bill’s passage through Congress for Bush to sign it into law in August of 2005. (

QUOTES ON THE CHENEY/CHABOT SPECIAL INTEREST ENERGY BILL:

“This is the lobbyist backyard barbecue bill, because every energy interest is going home with its pockets stuffed with pork, while taxpayers get roasted... lawmakers let go any fiscal inhibitions and started spending like a bunch of drunken sailors on wasteful, unnecessary energy projects.” --LINK: Taxpayers for Common Sense, 7/26/05

“The overall 2005 energy bill was a grievous disappointment… ill-advised tax breaks and subsidies” --LINK:
“Try again”, The Cincinnati Post editorial, 4/28/06

A year later after Bush signed the 2005 Energy Bill to law, gas prices are at record heights and "many experts say it has been largely ineffective and has even contributed to rising energy costs." --LINK: ("Analysis: EPAct One Year Later , United Press International, 8/04/06)

Big Oil has long supported Chabot. Chabot took thousands of dollars from Big Oil like Exxon as recently as June and has taken over $65,000 worth of contributions over the years. Chabot has even taken thousands of dollars from Cheney's former company, Halliburton. (Chabot FEC Reports)

STEVE CHABOT'S CORPORATE WELFARE FLIP-FLOP
In his 1st congressional term, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Chabot called tax breaks for big oil companies “corporate welfare that the government can’t afford.” Chabot even bucked his party and voted against a provision “that would give big oil companies a tax break for deep water wells drilled in the Gulf of Mexico.” Since that time Chabot has flip-flopped, voting for every Bush-Cheney Energy Bill to give billions in corporate welfare to oil companies.
